Julian Merryweather arrived to the Blue Jays in the Josh Donaldson trade. For that purpose on your own, I’m anticipating he will get every single likelihood to aid the group. And considering that he’s coming off Tommy John surgical treatment, back again in March of past calendar year. So he can go onto the 60-working day DL at the stop of spring. The roster location will come in helpful.
Merryweather is 27 and hasn’t pitched in the majors. Which is not a ringing endorsement of his potential. But then, he misplaced all of past calendar year immediately after the Tommy John and likely was dealing with arm issues the season right before.
He was a 5th round draft select in 2014. He was variety of averagish in A ball in 2014 and 2015. 2016 went substantially better. He had a 2.60 Era in 135 innings split amongst Substantial A and AA. He gave up 32 walks and had 119 strikeouts. 2017 was not very good, he had a 5.32 Era in 25 starts off, split amongst Double and Triple A. In 128.2 innings, he authorized 142 hits, 35 walks and 128 strikeouts.
Julian throws tricky (or he did right before the surgical treatment). Baseball America says his fastball sits in the mid-90s and can access 97. He has a curve, slider and a changeup. He’s a significant guy, 6’4”, and will get very good downward motion on his pitches.
So what happens this calendar year?
I would assume he starts off the calendar year on the 60-working day DL, performs out in Dunedin. If issues go nicely he could go for a rehab assignment. And see from there. Perhaps he could be a September simply call up.
In the lengthy operate, the group would like him to be a starter. But, if it doesn’t function out he throws tricky enough to function out of the pen.
Will we see Merryweather pitch in Toronto this calendar year?
