Blue Jays Buy Themselves Time With Decision on Yangervis Solarte

Get ready for an abundance of news concerning the MLB and offseason roster moves. The season just ended on Sunday but teams are wasting no time.

The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that they’ve declined Yangervis Solarte’s $5.5 million team option for 2019. The decision doesn’t make the 31-year old infielder a free agent, however. Rather, he will remain on the 40-man roster and is still eligible for arbitration.

Solarte will instead earn a $750K buyout. He’ll remain on the roster because he does not yet have six full years of service in the MLB.

Solarte slashed .267/.330/.492 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI in his first 50 games as a Blue Jay.

However, in 69 games after June 1, he slashed .202/.242/.305, striking out 40 times and walking just 13 times. Not to mention he spent some time on the DL as well.

You can see why the Blue Jays are giving themselves another month to decide on Solarte. The talent is certainly there, but he doesn’t provide it on a consistent basis.
