Toronto Blue Jays

Jon Berti, Denis Diaz, Marcus Stroman and more

A look at some of the recent news and notes pertaining to the Toronto Blue Jays including updates on Jon Berti, Denis Diaz, and former GM J.P. Ricciardi.

Berti Landed By Fish

The Miami Marlins have inked Jon Berti to a minor league pact with an invitation to spring training. The speedy utility player made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2018 as a late-season call-up managing to get into four games.

The 28-year old held his own notching four hits including a double and triple while swiping a bag in 15 plate appearances. Berti spent eight seasons in the Blue Jays minor league ranks so perhaps a change of scenery will afford Berti an opportunity to remain with the big club in 2019.

The Marlins also nabbed former Jays farmhand Harold Ramirez on a minor-league deal last week as well.

Stroman Does 15 Cities In 5 Days

Marcus Stroman completed a five-day, 15-city, whirlwind tour across Canada as an ambassador for Cargo Jet Airways. The Stro-Show traveled from one end of the country to the other making stops in Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa to name a few. Even his old pal Jose Bautista joined him for part of the cross-country journey.

Jays Cut Ties With Diaz

The Jays released 24-year old minor leaguer, Denis Diaz after another disappointing campaign. The young hurler suffered his second straight campaign with an earned run average north of seven. In 21 relief appearances, Diaz sported an inflated 7.31 earned run average which was surprisingly lower than his 2017 total.

The native of Honduras spent last season in Low-A with Vancouver and had been in the Jays farm system since 2013.

Ricciardi Looks To Join Giants Front Office

J.P. Ricciardi appears to be close to joining the San Francisco Giants front office as a Senior Advisor according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Ricciardi held the position of General Manager with the Blue Jays from 2002 through to 2009.

The front office executive has been the New York Mets special assistant since leaving Toronto.
