Wendle vs. Urena and Berti

Joey Wendle, the versatile 28-year-old rookie who has played five positions this season but primarily mans second base, has played himself into the American League rookie-of-the-year conversation with a .300 average and a 4.4 WAR heading into play Thursday. That’s the kind of season infielders Richard Urena, who has hit .284 in 96 at-bats, and Jon Berti, an eight-year minor-leaguer who got his first big-league hit on Wednesday, can learn from.

If Blake Snell is able to keep his ERA under 2.00 after his start on Saturday, he will become just the seventh player in the live ball era (since 1920) to win at least 20 games and post a sub 2.00 ERA before his 26th birthday. The last two American League pitchers to do so at any age were Roger Clemens in 1990 and Ron Guidry in 1978. The left-handed Snell is considered a top candidate to win the AL Cy Young Award … Toronto could be saying goodbye to two people Sunday: skipper John Gibbons will manage his last Jays game and right-hander Marco Estrada, 35, will make likely his last start for the team after four seasons with the club. Estrada will be a free agent in the off-season … Rays centre-fielder Kevin Kiermaier suffered a season-ending hairline fracture in his right foot on Wednesday. Third baseman Matt Duffy is day to day with a quadriceps injury … Tampa Bay, with 88 wins, is chasing a 90-win season for the first time since 2013 … Jays second baseman Devon Travis is done for the season with left knee and hamstring soreness.
